POK stands for “Pakistan-occupied Kashmir” which refers to the region of Kashmir that is currently controlled by Pakistan. The region of Kashmir has been a contentious issue between India and Pakistan since the partition of British India in 1947. Both countries claim the region as their own and have fought several wars over it. The current boundary, known as the Line of Control, divides the region into two parts: Indian-administered Kashmir and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The Pakistan-administered Kashmir region is further divided into two parts: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan. Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is governed by Pakistan as a semi-autonomous region with its own elected government. Gilgit-Baltistan is governed directly by the Pakistani government and has been given limited autonomy in 2009.
POK has its own parliament, judiciary, and political parties. Pakistan has repeatedly claimed that it is the rightful owner of POK, but India has not accepted this claim. India has always maintain that POK is an integral part of India and that the region was illegally occupied by Pakistan.
The region has been a flashpoint for conflict between the two countries, with both sides accusing the other of human rights abuses and violations of international law. The situation in POK has been a source of tension between India and Pakistan, with both countries accusing each other of sponsoring terrorism in the region. The UN and other international organizations have called for a peaceful resolution to the dispute and for the rights of the people in POK to be respected.
