GME course or Graduate Marine Engineer Course is a certified course and approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Government of India).  This course scenario includes various subjects and topics that are monitored by DGS.  Mostly, the admission for GME is done through entrance exam like – IMU CET, AP EAMCET etc.  Candidates have undergone training and working towards a certification from the DGS that makes candidates eligible to work on merchant ships. This learning programme is offered in specific merchant navy universities and colleges. It is an in-depth study of different topics included in marine engineering. Some of them are- Marine Electrotechnology, Electrical Lab, Boilers, Electric laboratory etc.

GME Course Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates must have cleared their BE or B.Tech in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering with at least 60% of marks at the UG level.
  • Candidates must have been a mandatory subject at Class 12th with a minimum aggregate of 50%.
  • The minimum age of the GME course is 28 year.
  • Candidates should be properly fit.

Educational qualifications

Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology in relevant fields such as mechanical & automation engineering, naval architecture, mechanical engineering, or marine engineering is the bare minimum educational qualification required. The candidate must have received at least 60 percent of the total possible points in the B.E. or B.Tech. program. The minimum aggregate marks required by each college may differ from one another.

Age limit

When applying, a candidate's age cannot be more than 28 yrs old during enrollment.

Standards For Physical And Medical Performance

For a candidate to be eligible for admission, he or she must meet the physical and medical requirements established by the Department of General Services (DGS). During the selection process, a candidate will be subjected to a medical examination by a DGS-approved doctor to determine whether or not they are physically & medically fit for duty.

The candidate's vision must be 6/6 or better without the use of external aids. The maximum power that can be used is +or-2.5. The applicant must not be color blind in any way.

Duration

The duration of the GME course is one year (12 months). It is a program for pre-employment training.

The Admission Process

 The admissions process varies slightly from one university to another, depending on the institution. The admission process at reputable institutions is based on merit. What a merit-based selection procedure looks like is shown in the diagram below –

  • The first step is to register.
  • Take an entrance exam or an aptitude exam
  • Panel interview.
  • A full medical examination will be performed.
  • Making a final decision

The very first and most important step is to register. Candidates must then show up for a basic qualifying examination, aptitude test, or entrance exam following their registration. A test of this nature would include subjects such as English, technical questions (domain-specific), and so on.

Candidates who pass the preliminary test will be invited to participate in the panel question and answer session stage of the process. The interview is conducted to assess the candidate's overall personality and aptitude. After the panel interview, there will be a physical & medical examination.

The medical exam will be performed by a doctor who has been approved by DGS. The last merit list would be compiled based on the results of these tests. Here on basis of their points total in the merit list, deserving candidates will be admitted to the program in which they have applied.

The cost of GME courses varies from one institution to another. On typical, it could be anything from 250K to 400K each year, depending on the position.
