Madras Medical College and Government General Hospital

Madras Medical College, also known as MMC Chennai started itself in the year 1664. It came into existence as a small hospital that was aimed at treating East India Company’s sick soldiers. It was Sir Edward winter who is responsible for building this British hospital in Chennai. This hospital turned into a government hospital in the year 1664. In the year 1842, it started allowing Indians and after 2 decades, this hospital turned into a college that has a good teaching faculty and comprehensive curriculum for its students. In 1857, the college gained its affiliation from Madras University.

Since 1988, this college is affiliated with the University of Dr. MGR Medical of Tamil Nadu. It has 9 affiliated institutions with multiple hospitals. All of them are approved by the Indian medical council. Presently, more than 2500 students are enrolled in this college under medical & paramedical courses. It also offers super-specialty and diploma programs in different specializations.
