The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee or IIT Roorkee was formally established in the year 1847, was named the Roorkee College. It was the First Engineering College in the British Empire which was built in India. But in the year 1854, it was renamed The Thomason College of Civil Engineering. On 21 September, a bill was passed in the Indian Parliament, which recognized this college as an ‘Institute of National Importance', so it was further renamed from the University of Roorkee to Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. Since then, IIT Roorkee is helping a lot of students in pursuing research for the country.
Ten disciplines in Engineering and Architecture are offered for Bachelor’s Degree courses and 55 Postgraduate Degree courses are offered in Engineering, Architecture, Applied Science, etc. The Institute also has facilities for doctoral programs related to all research and department centers.IIT Roorkee has gained an international reputation worldwide.
