Established in 1916, Govt. College, Anantapur is known as "The Old Lady of Rayalaseema" since it is the oldest and most famous institution in the Rayalaseema (southern A.P.) region. This institution has served the great cause of education for about a century now.

On July 8th, 1916, Shri S. E. Ranganathan became the first Principal of the Ceded Area College (a Second-Grade College). Part II began with 41 students distributed among the departments of history, kannada, telugu, sanskrit, and logical logic.

This was the largest class yet. Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, a professor of the teachers, served as a member of the staff in the formative days of the institution's operation, alongside the distinguished Principal, Shri S. E. Ranganathan. In the college, he was a Philosophy Tutor.
