MSP Full Form

What Is The Full Form Of MSP?

MSP stands for Minimum Support Price. It is a price at which the government guarantees to purchase a certain agricultural commodity from the farmers. The main objective of MSP is to protect the interests of the farmers by ensuring that they are not exploited by intermediaries and that they receive a fair price for their produce.

The government of India fixes the MSP for various agricultural commodities such as paddy, wheat, sugarcane, cotton, and others, based on the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). The CACP takes into account various factors such as the cost of production, market demand and supply, and the price trends of similar commodities in the international market while determining the MSP.

The MSP is usually higher than the market price and acts as a safety net for farmers when the market price falls below the MSP. The government also procures the grains at the MSP to build up its buffer stock and also to provide food security to the people through Public Distribution System (PDS).

MSP is an important policy tool for the government to stabilize the prices of agricultural commodities, protect the interests of farmers, and also to ensure food security. However, there are also some criticisms towards the MSP system, such as the fact that MSP does not reach all farmers, and that the procurement process is not always efficient.

In recent years, the government of India has been taking steps to improve the MSP system, such as expanding the coverage of the MSP and increasing the procurement of grains at MSP.

Overall, MSP is an important policy tool for the government to protect the interests of farmers and ensure food security. It acts as a safety net for farmers when the market price falls below the MSP. However, the system is not perfect and the government is taking steps to improve it.
